What Is CBD Isolate?

CBD oil has recently gained an incredible amount of traction in the health and wellness space as more and more people use CBD oil for migraines, stress, performance recovery, and other issues. Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is a highly versatile and incredibly nutrient-rich plant used for centuries to make rope and clothing and as part of a healthy diet. The oldest evidence of its use was found on imprints of pottery in China around 10,000 B.C.

Hemp is rich in what’s called cannabinoids, powerful phytochemicals that systematically work with the human body to create homeostasis and overall good health. To synthesize cannabinoids, the body has an endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors in both the brain and body that bind to cannabinoids and process them for use across human systems.

Scientists have amped up their research on cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system due to positive findings regarding the connection between a properly functioning endocannabinoid system and increased wellbeing, plus the increased interest in cannabinoids as an alternative to traditional medicine.

But thus far, the scientific studies back just one cannabinoid for its health benefits: CBD.

CBD or cannabidiol is one of the many phytochemicals present in the hemp plant. Unlike THC, another cannabinoid, CBD has absolutely zero psychoactive effects.

CBD isolate is 100% pure cannabidiol. Since no other cannabinoids, flavonoids, or terpenes are present in CBD isolate, CBD oil made with isolate is a great way to enjoy the beneficial effects of the hemp plant without the “high” caused by THC. The result is a balanced system, as well as documented relief from certain conditions:

CBD for Pain and Inflammation– In this study, CBD was shown to improve chronic pain and inflammation in rats and mice.

CBD for Anxiety– Clinical review points to a positive correlation between CBD and symptom relief from certain anxiety disorders, including:

General Anxiety Disorder

Panic Disorder

OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

Social Anxiety Disorder

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

CBD oil has many other documented health benefits for stress relief, Type 1 Diabetes, workout recovery, drug withdrawal, epilepsy, insomnia and more. Some research suggests it may even be a powerful force in the battle against cancer.

How is CBD isolate processed?

In order to obtain pure CBD isolate (cannabidiol) from industrial hemp, it must be extracted and separated from the other compounds in order to be considered isolate. Here are a few primary extraction methods used today:

Olive Oil Extraction- Because this process is labor intensive and only produces small batches, most CBD manufacturers do not utilize it. This is seen more in homegrown operations that produce for a single family.

Solvent Extraction- Solvent extraction using ethanol or butane is common practice for many CBD purveyors. However, there are multiple downsides to the method which can have potentially harmful effects, including the presence of contaminants and the destruction of beneficial plant waxes.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction- By far and away, CO2 extraction is the cleanest, safest, and most environmentally friendly extraction method. It’s also the most expensive, making some manufacturers reticent to adopt the process. Pressure and temperature of liquid CO2 increases until the molecules become supercritical, meaning they have both gas and liquid properties. For extraction, supercritical CO2 is run through hemp in an extractor where it pulls terpenes and trichomes (these contain the cannabinoids) from the plant. This solution is then separated and broken down. In the separation process, CBD is isolated from other cannabinoids and stored in its pure, unadulterated state.

CBD isolate is the purest way to intake this powerful and healing cannabinoid through topical, edible, vaping, or other delivery methods. Adding this compound to a daily health regimen has positively impacted the wellbeing of countless people around the world looking for natural alternatives to traditional medicines.
